HISTORY
The Ferrari Testarossa “Monodado” is an early and particularly desirable version of the iconic Testarossa, distinguished by its unique single-lug (center-lock) wheels—hence the Italian nickname Monodado. Produced between 1984 and early 1986, these early examples represent the purest form of the Testarossa’s original design before it underwent a series of technical and aesthetic changes in later years.

Unveiled at the 1984 Paris Motor Show, the Testarossa was Ferrari’s answer to the demands of the 1980s supercar boom—combining extreme performance with dramatic design. Penned by Pininfarina, the Testarossa’s wide, low stance, signature side strakes, and aggressive proportions quickly made it an icon not just of Ferrari’s lineup, but of pop culture, famously starring in Miami Vice and adorning countless bedroom posters around the world.

At its heart lies a naturally aspirated 4.9-liter flat-12 engine, producing 390 horsepower and capable of propelling the car from 0 to 100 km/h in around 5.3 seconds, with a top speed north of 290 km/h. The powerplant is mated to a five-speed gated manual transmission, delivering power to the rear wheels with classic Ferrari precision and drama.

What sets the Monodado apart from later Testarossas is its use of center-lock wheels, borrowed from Ferrari’s Formula 1 heritage. These single-nut alloy wheels not only offer a distinctive and motorsport-inspired aesthetic, but also make early examples particularly collectible. Other subtle differences on early cars include a dual high-mounted side mirror setup on some versions, distinct badging, and differences in the interior layout and trim.

Only a limited number of these Monodado cars were produced before Ferrari transitioned to a more conventional five-lug wheel system for ease of servicing and homologation purposes in certain markets. As a result, early Testarossas have become increasingly sought after by collectors who appreciate the car’s purist design and rarity.

Today, the Ferrari Testarossa Monodado stands as a compelling blend of 1980s nostalgia, raw mechanical performance, and unmistakable Italian styling. With its instantly recognizable shape and exhilarating driving dynamics, it remains one of the most iconic Ferraris ever built—and in its earliest, most unfiltered form, the Monodado is among the most collectible.

OUR Testarossa
Our example has been in the careful care of its current owner since 2015 where it has formed a part of his large private collection.Despite only very light usage the current owner has not spared the expense of regular maintenance. In the past 1,600 km the car has had four services, including two cambelt changes.
