Golf 1 Convertible Quartett

After production of the Beetle convertible ceased in early 1980, the open-top Golf became a bestseller. With sales figures for convertibles steadily increasing in the 1980s and the Golf Cabriolet appearing in numerous television series (Black Forest Clinic, Remington Steele), the vehicle achieved a certain cult status and is now a sought-after youngtimer. Production of the first Golf Cabriolet continued even after the Golf I was replaced by the VW Golf II in August 1983. With the facelift designated by VW as an ‘all-round spoiler replacement’, the appearance was adapted to contemporary tastes in May 1987. The grille was more heavily ribbed and the car was given a wider, more bullish shape by larger plastic bumpers with attached wheel arches and sill extensions. From 1992, the Golf I Cabriolet was available on request with a driver’s airbag, making it the first VW to offer an airbag. From September 1992, the car was only available with the 1.8-litre engine with an output of 72 kW (98 hp) and a regulated catalytic converter. Many special models were released, including this one: the Quartett.
The Volkswagen Golf 1 Cabrio Quartett is a rare and special variant of the original Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet, produced between 1979 and 1993. The Quartett was distinguished by its unique equipment and stylish details. It had special rims, chrome trim strips and a distinctive two-tone paint option. The interior was more luxurious, with comfortable seats and high-quality upholstery. Mechanically, the Quartett shared many features with the standard Golf Cabriolet, including a variety of engine options, from economical four-cylinders to powerful GTI engines. Despite its limited production period and rarity, the Volkswagen Golf 1 Cabrio Quartett remains loved by collectors and car enthusiasts for its unique look and historical significance within the Golf family. It is a charming reminder of an era when open-top driving was synonymous with freedom and fun on the road.

An original Dutch Golf 1 Cabriolet from virtually the last month of production. Delivered on 14 May 1993. Specified with the Quartett bumper package in Paprika Red with the indestructible 1.8 2H engine.
As many of you know, 37 million Golfs have been sold to date. Fifty years after its introduction, the car is still part of Volkswagen’s model range. However, no other car of its kind has such a fan base as the Golf 1 and 2. Due to the popularity of the Golf 1 Cabrio, it was decided in the late 1980s not to introduce a new Cabrio, but to give the current model a facelift. While there is a clear aesthetic difference between the Golf 1 and the Golf 2 hatchback, this is much harder to see in its roofless sibling. Technically speaking, this model was produced from 1979 to July 1993, making it iconic.
Sometimes you know right away what you have in your hands. Despite being covered in dust, the bright red paint still sparkled as it always had. After asking the owner a few questions, we quickly realised that this was a special car. 73,940 original kilometres, an interior with no visible damage, original LE Castellet rims and the stickers supplied on the tailgate and in front of the rear wheels.
From new until 2014, it had one owner, and then it went to the next enthusiast who took care of it until last year. The car comes with a full service history. And by full, we mean really full. Even the invoices for the very first services are still in the folder.
